10 Tips For When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

Just about everyone I speak with finds they are feeling overwhelmed at times. There always seems to be too much to do and not enough time to do it in.
But, when feeling overwhelmed robs you from enjoying your life, or your work, a little help can go a long way.
In reality, overwhelm is more about managing your energy and your mindset than it is about getting things done.
Here are 10 Tips that will really help when you find your'e feeling overwhelmed:
#1: Focus on the Big Picture
Most of the time we get overwhelmed because we are so focused on what’s happening right now instead of looking at the big picture. Step back for a moment, take a breath and remind yourself that in the big scheme of things you’re always OK.
#2: Change Your Environment
Your environment impacts you more than you may think. Stacks of books, papers and bills on your desk often trigger a sense of overwhelm. A quick fix is to change your environment. Get rid of the clutter, and the triggers will be gone.
#3: Acknowledge It and Let It Go
Many people try to solve the problem of overwhelm by running away when it is really just a part of who they are. All the energy within you (good and bad) are clamoring for your attention. Take a moment to stop, close your eyes, acknowledge the overwhelm and let it go. It’s not serving you anyhow.
#4: Learn Something New
If you are continually living in a state of overwhelm, you’re probably functioning from a less than ideal state of consciousness.
Take some time to learn something new. Read a book. Listen to a podcast. View an online training video.
New information helps to shape your perspective and gives insight on best practices for responding to your life and business.
#5: Exercise
Exercise is a fantastic way to reduce stress and increase your energy levels. Schedule in daily exercise – go for a walk or run, do Pilates or yoga. The stretching and strengthening of your muscles release the tension within your body and boosts your energy levels.
#6: Stop and Breathe
When you take deep cleansing breaths (the ones from your diaphragm), you are able to not only relax but to give your internal organs a bit of a massage. Deep breaths also help your body release toxins.
You can deep breathe anywhere and at any time of day. Just breathe in through your nose for the count of 5 and then exhale through your mouth for the count of 5. Do it five times in a row and see if you don’t feel better.
#7: Quiet Your Mind and Do Some Inner Work
If overwhelm is a state of energy that needs to be shifted, then working on your inner thoughts and emotions is one way to change that energy. It may take the form of releasing old wounds, forgiving others or healing from previous trauma. As you do that, make it a point to connect with something greater than you.
Here is an exercise you can do. It works wonderfully for me.
Close your eyes and focus on all the things you are grateful for – spouse or partner, family, friends, health, etc. Practicing gratitude will put you in a peaceful state of mind.
#8: Play with Your Kids or Animals
"Anytime you are feeling overwhelmed, you are generally concentrating on past events or the future. It’s hard to be overwhelmed when you are living in the moment." Megan Tull
An easy way to enjoy the moment is through play. Go have some fun with your children or animals!
#9: Dance
When you feel overwhelmed, it’s easy to feel paralyzed. You can remedy that by putting on some fun music and dancing like a fool for 3 minutes. Try and see how your energy shifts by the second verse.
#10: Call Your Coach
You need support and guidance; it helps keep you focused on your goals. Having someone or a group of people to hold you accountable and help you reach your highest potential can help keep overwhelm at bay. If you have a coach, reach out to them. If you don’t, find one!
